Daily Language Devices

The study of how rhetorical devices affect language comprises the essence of how English teachers teach students to analyze literature.  Tropes (figures of speech) and Schemes (language structures) make up the core of this study in any secondary or post-secondary classroom.  This intensive 10-week study, offered as an immediate download,  will prepare your students for analyzing the most common and important language devices used by writers and speakers.  It covers not only what the devices are but how they affect meaning.  This unit also contains daily overhead blocks for each day of a 10-week cycle, complete with quizzes and exams for summative and cumulative grading.  View Samples

Reasons for having daily warm-ups (sponge activities) in your classroom:

  1. They get students on track much faster than trying to bring order through other means.
  2. Students spend more time learning.  Just multiply that gained five minutes (that you may otherwise spend trying to bring order to a classroom) by 180 classroom days.  That's 900 minutes a year, or about 20 class days of instruction lost per school year!
  3. Warm-ups allow for a changing up of activities that educators know is so crucial in keeping a classroom of students interested and on-task.
  4. They create a sense of ritual procedures and consistency that permeates the whole course.

One way of using them effectively involves the teacher having students work on the activities for a few minutes daily (knowing that they will be accountable via a folder grade at the end of each six weeks).  The teacher may also give quizzes regularly on the skills taught through these five-minute drills and regularly monitor performance with random  questioning.

To assure that all students are on task, at the end of every six-weeks period the teacher may take up notebooks, looking for and counting the daily warm-ups (among other things) in each notebook, making this section a big part of the major notebook grade.
